Arianna: Myth and Reality
According to the legend, it was through the help of Arianna, the daughter of King Minos, that Theseus avoided his certain death by being able to navigate his way around the Labyrinth and finally to slay the Minataur. Arianna fell in love with Theseus at first sight, as she saw him disembark from the ship carrying him to Crete, where he was to be sacrificed. In order to help him escape his certain death, she gave him a clew, a ball of thread, which enabled him to reach and slay the Minotaur without getting lost in the labyrinth.
