Automatic Spot Recognition (ASR)

Automatic Spot Recognition (ASR) is the scanning software responsible for the identification of repetitive commercial spots. The scanners compare the visual and audio content of the on-air broadcast against the library of active commercial campaigns. The current overnight monitoring system is capable of scanning against a reference library of more than 20,000 commercials. The sophisticated recognition algorithms which evaluate every frame of the broadcast, are capable of accurately locating the start and end time down to the second of each commercial spot.

The ASR is an automated process that runs 24/7. On a daily basis the quality control staff retrieve the ASR logs to verify the content that has been automatically recognised and to update the ‘signatures’ stored within the reference library. When a new spot is identified, the operator simply adds a description (copy description, brand name etc.) and includes it in the reference library.

Another job of the recognition engine is to assist the data entry clerks with ad-hoc scanning tasks. The operator can select any newly broadcast content and request the ASR engine to locate this item from all of monitored TV stations and automatically log it. Even the first day’s output can be scanned before the operator includes them into the signatures library.
