Summary of Available Files
As holders of BARB contract 4, AGB Nielsen Media Research produce, each day, a number of standard files for the industry as shown below. "Database 1" files contain data at the individual respondent level whereas "database 2" files contain data aggregated by either time or event (commercial or programme) for a number of audience categories. In order to produce the event based files, AGB Nielsen Media Research receive from broadcasters, commercial "as-run" logs for each commercial BARB reported channel which detail the transmitted spots and breaks of that day. AGB Nielsen Media Research validate and process these to produce a comprehensive listing of the day's events across all BARB reporting panels. Similarly, "as-run" logs for programme events are also received and processed, in this case this includes the "networking " of programmes where necessary and based on the BARB networking rules as defined in the reference manual.
database 1 and database 2 time-based files are reported according to the "polling day" [2:00 to 25:59 (1:59)]; database 2 event based files are reported according to the "reporting day" [6:00 to 29:59 (5:59)}. General files such as the Universe file and Rate Factor file are updated as necessary, but are available daily; the updates added to each file containing dates indicating the period to which the universe or factor relates.
As the requirements of each BARB subscriber vary, BARB and AGB Nielsen Media Research have developed a rate-card based on data sets that are combinations of the available files. These data sets are described below.
In addition, customised files can be made available. These include a number of standard files not available in the datasets:
